Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C

17-Jul-08

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C and probably contracted the liver disease from drug use more than 30 years ago, according to her publicist.

“The virus, found during a routine examination, is likely the result of her drug use many decades ago,” her publicist Lellie Capwell said in a statement released on Wednesday.

Cole, 58, the daughter of legendary singer Nat King Cole, is responding well to treatment but is suffering what doctors called “significant side effects” including fatigue, muscle aches and dehydration.

The singer, whose father died of lung cancer when she was 15, documented her addiction to cocaine, heroin and alcohol in her 2000 autobiography “Angel On My Shoulder.” She overcame her addiction after a lengthy stay in rehab in the early 1980s.

“I’ve been so fortunate to have learned so much from my past experiences,” Cole said in the statement.

“I am embraced by the love and support of my family and friends; I am committed to my belief in myself and in my abiding faith to meet this challenge with a heartfelt optimism and determination. This is how I intend to deal with this current challenge in my life,” she said.

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne infectious disease that is often without symptoms and can cause inflammation of the liver, and in extreme case, liver cancer. It is usually contracted through transfusions of unscreened blood, or by injecting or inhaling drugs.

Kendra Ross “Jumps at the Sun” With Her Debut Release New Voice

25-Apr-08

Kendra Ross talks to MosaicthumpOne of my favorite passages from Zora Neale Hurston is, “Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.” I think this resonates particularly true to Kendra Ross because I can feel love in every note on her debut release, New Voice. Ironically, Kendra does not have a new voice at all, or should I say, “ain’t nuthin’ new about Kendra’s voice” (I had to do it). Vocally, I detect soulful cues from the likes of Shirley Brown, Ruth Pointer, and even the great Phyllis Hyman. I did however, find Kendra’s spin on life, love and the human condition refreshing in a way that I had not expected from a freshman release. I was even more astonished to find that the person lived up to the music that I had become so fond of.

Like her greatest influences Katherine Dunham and Zora Neale Hurston, Kendra has paved a way for herself where none yet existed. A renaissance woman in her own right, she has managed to balance her spirituality, education, corporate aspirations and an astounding knack for penning lyrics that seem to penetrate to the core of your emotion. Clearly Kendra is too much to for anthropology, too much for the music industry and way too much for the corporate rat race. While these external demands do exist in her life, she has managed to channel all of them into a compilation that took my breath away.

Lola’s child has made mom proud in more ways than than she could have ever imagined by honing her live performances to become cleverly designed theatrical spectacles; all-the-while seeking an introspect that has made Kendra an even better person. After our conversation, I can not surmise even one scenario where this woman does not attain all the goals that, I know, exist in the far reaching crevices of her imagination. In my mind, I do not see a singer bound for greatness, I see a person that achieves greatness every time her music profoundly touches another soul. Conjuring a “hiding place” that could dampen the radiance of this woman’s indomitable spirit is unthinkable. Kendra’s “New Voice” can be described in another of Zora’s greatest quotes, “Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to ‘jump at the sun.’ We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground.” Lola’s child has certainly taken a giant leap towards the sun with “New Voice” but I can not see her falling back to earth for quite some time to come.

Upscale Underground Aims To Fill A Niche

11-Apr-08

Lindsey Millar

Traveling to bigger metropolitan areas inevitably provokes “If only Little Rock had _____” discussions.
Usually, those wants and wishes die at the end of the conversation. Not so for Jason Marshall, 24, and Jennifer Jackson, 32. After the pair traveled to Dallas to see smooth soul man Muziq Soulchild, they wondered why more neo-soul acts weren’t coming to Little Rock. Some research, a few calls and connections made here and there and the two had formed Upscale Underground, a booking and promotional company focused on showcasing national talent that, they believe, hasn’t gotten appropriate shine.

Upscale means classy, laidback — an event removed from the beefs, aggression and misogyny of the clubs. Underground, like in most musical contexts, suggests artists who fly under the mainstream radar.

Upscale Underground’s debut of its “Soul’d Out” concert series barely fit that qualification. Dwele, a neo-soul artist from Detroit, came to Juanita’s in October, just months before his guest appearance on Kanye West’s song “Flashing Lights” earned the pair a Grammy nomination. The company has also featured jazz/soul artist Frank McComb and blues/soul crooner Keite Young. So far all performances have been held at Juanita’s.

Aside from filling a niche, the motivation behind Upscale Underground is simple, if almost quaint in today’s music industry: Marshall and Jackson genuinely love neo-soul music. Their early success is a testament to that. For Dwele, Marshall says they “showed him some of that Southern hospitality” and fed him and his band a big home-cooked Southern meal. The stomach is the quickest route to the heart: Dwele returned in January just to host an event and Marshall says he’ll be back again soon, too.

On Friday, Upscale Underground presents

So far, for Marshall, who works for Alltel and dabbles, impressively, in hip-hop production, and Jackson, who owns and operates Soul Serenity Salon and Spa, Upscale Underground is a part-time gig. The advances paid to artists and other costs associated with events come from their pockets, though they’re actively pursuing sponsorship.

To augment what’s so far been an almost monthly major concert offering, Upscale Underground also hosts weekly parties on Thursdays at Crush Wine Bar. Often, the parties serve as listening sessions for just-released albums by artists in the pantheon, like Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. Occasionally, local acts like Rodney Block and the Real Music Lovers or Delya Chandler and Smooth September perform.

On the horizon for Upscale Underground: smooth soul diva Conya Doss on May 10, and in September, to celebrate the company’s one year anniversary, a one-day festival in Riverfest Amphitheatre with bigger-name national acts. As Upscale Underground continues to establish connections, Marshall predicts that Little Rock will become a must-stop spot for all neo-soul artists.

Zo’s | Freelance

09-Apr-08

Zo manages to create technically sound compositions that would sate even the most ardent critic, while never loosing that soulful, funk, swing that has become his signature sound.

I had the distinguished opportunity to speak with Zo a while ago and I have to say I found this conversation to be one of the most inspiring interviews I’ve ever had with an artist. In my opinion, Zo is one of the dopest (is that a word?) composers, producers and musicians in music. He has been able to create some of the most musically stimulating arrangements this side of Quincy Jones; yes I did say Quincy. He has the unique ability to bridge the gap between testing his own musical boundaries while giving his fans something soulfully relevant with every release.

Freelance, the newest incarnation from the Musical Architect, as he is referred to, is simply a pleasure to experience. In Freelance, Zo manages to create technically sound compositions that would sate even the most ardent critic, while never loosing that soulful, funk, swing that has become his signature sound. Remarkably grounded, I had no idea I’d have to explain to him that like Slum Village, Kem, Dwele, Platinum Pied Pipers, and we can not forget Dilla; he is responsible for the Detroit sound that is so prominent in today’s soul movement. It was refreshing to meet a person that still refining his craft to the point where none of that seems to be as important as making good music.

If you are looking for ill-produced, hardly-mastered tracks that contain elements of the same 10 songs from the seventies then Freelance is not for you. Quite the contrary, Freelance lends itself to soulful connoisseurs looking hear the evolution of soul. Every song on his new album is an unabashed look into what made Zo the artist and the man that he is today. It is a pleasure listening to him pour his heart into every composition. Freelance picks up on the next chapter of Zo’s legacy and only reinforces what I have heard and continue to hear in any track produced by Zo; that is the elevation of an entire musical genre.

Frank McComb and Sy Smith Play Mosaicthump’s Definition of Soul Series

04-Apr-08

Sy Smith Mosaicthump, Definition of Soul: West Coast EditionFrank McComb and Sy Smith Saturday May 31, 2008, The City Theatre, 2301 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48201. Show starts at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $29 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including Hockeytown Authentics to adults 21 and over. Call 248-645-6666 or order tickets online at ticketmaster.com and olympiaentertainment.com.

Definition of Soul concert goers will experience the top independent soul artists up close and personal; in an intimate setting that has to be seen to be believed, Detroit’s City Theatre. Day two of this series, Definition of Soul: West Coast Experience, features Frank McComb and Sy Smith as she makes her debut performance in Detroit.

Frank McComb uses his status as an “independent artist” to create some of the most progressive and diverse music on the scene today. Frank McComb left an indelible mark in his Detroit debut solo performance in 2007. One thing that attendees at his first show will assert is that standing-room-only were not the words to properly describe the packed crowd at Detroit’s Jazz Cafe. Expect Frank McComb to deliver a 70’s inspired performance of Jazz, funk and soul reminiscent of Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. The best description for the music he creates is 70’s throwback. Frank’s mature, ballad-heavy music often moves people to tears.

Sy Smith emerged with her independent debut The Syberspace Social in 2005, which featured contributions vocalist Anthony Hamilton and famed producers such as James Poyser and Victor Duplaix. She regularly sang with Vonda Shepard on the popular FOX television series “Ally McBeal.” In addition, Smith shared the vocal spotlight with legendary singer Al Green performing the title song to the Showtime series “Soul Food.” Smith takes the listener to a cosmic café where freedom is encouraged and progressive thinking is demanded. Her new release, Conflict, seems to provide more of the signature Sy Smith, rendering a poised mixture of Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz, Rock with a little social commentary for good measure. Mosaicthump and Syberspace is a combination for the ages, come see the two collide.

A Letter from Conya Doss to Her Detroit Friends and Fans

31-Mar-08

Conya Doss Release Still (in Stores now!)On the heels of her fourth release and fresh off a successful European tour. The Midwest’s own beloved soulful songstress Conya Doss was to appear in Detroit on Friday, March 28 so that one of her favorite cities could be the first to experience her new release “Still”. I had an opportunity to talk to Conya prior to this event and she was, as always, really hyped to make this appearance.

Unfortunately, due to unknown circumstances, she was not able to perform. I saw Conya at the venue so I, like many others, are baffled as to why her highly anticipated performance did not take place. I observed that the atmosphere at Live Soul Fridays to be wonderfully well done. The sound was great and the venue’s intimate setting was just the place for such a performance to take place. I was slightly disappointed when the show did not happen as it was supposed to. On another note, I had an opportunity to see a rare performance by one of Detroit’s own, Darnell Kendricks, although that performance was cut short.

I wanted to share with the mosaicthump subscribers and followers the email sent to me and others in the Detroit area explaining, in her own words, what went down. All I know is that I want another performance from Conya in Detroit as soon as possible. I hope we all get another shot to witness this extraordinary talent do it as not many have been able to, sustainably, do in in her genre. Conya, please know that Detroit loves you and mosaicthump loves you.

Here is the letter from Conya:

Dear Supporters,

I would first and foremost like to apologize to all my fans in Detroit who came out to Pure Nightclub on Friday, March 28. Myself and the band were there and were ready to perform, but the promoter for the event did not come through on his end. The band was not paid nor was I paid so it was just not possible for us to perform. I tried to make concessions with the promoter and he was still not willing or able to meet these concessions. Prior to this, the band and I rehearsed at sound-check. The promoter was at the sound-check and was fully aware of what would take place if his obligations were not met. I would like everyone to know that from here on out I will no longer be supporting Live Soul Fridays. I love Detroit, but the promoter was just not on the up and up. As previously stated, I enjoyed speaking with those of you who did come out to the show. I will be back in Detroit soon and I hope to see all of you there under better circumstances!

Peace and Blessings,
Conya

SOUL ARTIST, RUSSELL TAYLOR AT SXSW 2008

28-Feb-08

Russell TaylorSaturday, March 15, 2008 at The Driskill Hotel, the Philadelphia native and a notable new member of the burgeoning soul movement Russell Taylor will be headling SXSW’s newest Soul/Urban showcase fresh off the heels of 2 sold out shows at London’s Jazz Café.

This coming March, Russell Taylor will perform at SXSW to promote his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Somewhere In Between’, including the song 2 B Loved, which video is currently in rotation on BETJ. His rock soul hybrid delivery has proven to be infectious as his fan base grows internationally after every show.

Russell Taylor first recorded and toured the US and Europe with the Basement Boys as featured vocalist on the songs “Last Dance” and “Fool For Love” (Top 10 single on the European charts). It was Russell’s live performances and soulful voice that initially won him much attention. We knew the best was yet to come, when Taylor gave us a taste of his talents as a Songwriter with the limited release of Soulstar.

Russell Taylor issues his formal debut album, ‘Somewhere In Between’ to an outstanding critical ovation and applause… we’ll let the critics speak for themselves:
“At the start of ‘Somewhere in Between’, Philly-bred-singer-songwriter Russell Taylor sings the praises of his favorite soul men, unfurling an honor list that includes Donny Hathaway, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. It doesn’t take long for Taylor to prove that he has talent to match his R&B tastes… His songs aren’t always inspired by purely romantic musings, as the blunt “Go Away’ illustrates, but Taylor never sounds more at home than when he casts himself as a neo-soul crooner pleading his case (“I Love U”) or tending to a broken heart for (“Tiny”).”

The Washington Post-Mike Joyce

“Stressing live instrumentation of fat bass and drums, scratching guitars, wrap-a-round keyboards and background vocals, he keeps things raw like open wounds.”

Urban Network Magazine-A.Scott Galloway
“Russell has created quite a buzz with his live performances… Throughout this disc, Russell displays exceptional songwriting skills. Not to mention a voice that could draw comparisons to Rashaan Patterson… This is a very good album by Mr. Taylor that establishes him as an artist you need to pay attention to.”
Catchagroove.com-UK

“He has carefully crafted a lifetime into his debut CD: experiences that in totality, have etched out a no-so-ordinary musical journey spanning Rock, Gospel, Soul and R&B. Seamless in it’s contruct you might not realize that you have been taken to school, cleverly disguised in the form of 16 live studio tracks.”
Mosaicthump.com

“On his debut album, Russell aims to satisfy listeners while sharing intimate thoughts on love, relationships and social responsibility. Charm your significant other with “2 B Loved”…calm things down with the very sensual “Braille” or switch moods with the remarkable single “Can’t Cry”.
Upscale Magazine

“One of the first things you notice when popping in Russell taylors album is the emphasized, ripping guitar licks. They’re there throught the CD, keeping the songs borderline between blues and rock, or soul and rock. It’s a hallmark of the album’s personality. The groove is always there. It is one of the sure things about an album that falls in between so many music forms.”
Rolling Out Magazine

Come out and enjoy Russell’s pioneering showcase at SXSW on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at The Driskill Hotel, The Victorian Room, 1 AM.
